As a parent of two children I know how difficult it can be to keep the kids busy as the school year comes to a close. Here in Savannah we have many opportunities for children of all ages on your journey to The Hostess City of The South. The first is a place my children love- The Savannah Children’s Museum which is in the same location as the Georgia State Railroad Museum. The children’s museum is sprawled about an old train depot. The outdoor play area features hours of entertainment including a maze and slides. While you’re inside the gates, tour the Georgia Railroad museum which includes a train ride the children will love. The children’s museum is operated by the Coastal Heritage Society. In addition to the children’s museum and Georgia State Railroad Museum the Coastal Heritage Society operates a History Museum, Harper Fowlkes House, Old Fort Jackson, and the Pinpoint Heritage Museum. Tickets can be purchased for each museum independently however ask about the combination ticket which includes admission to any three of the Coastal Heritage Society’s Venues over a three day time span for a reduced rate. Another must see for children is the Oakland Island Wildlife Center. Just a short ride from downtown the family can meander through the forest to see animals such as a Cougar, Red Fox, Bobcat, Wolves, and many more. Be sure to check out the events calendar for the live animal encounter. The admissions cost is structured as the following 18 and up $5.00, 4-7 $3.00, and children 3 and under are free. Lastly, a 20 minute drive to Skidaway Island will lead you to a destination with two activities for children. The first is the University Of Georgia Aquarium. The aquarium includes numerous small tanks featuring over 200 marine animals, a touch tank, nature trails, and board walk. Admission costs range in the following structure 13-54 $6.00, 3-12 $4.00, 1-2 free, 55 and up $4, military and college students with ID $4.00 Skidaway Island State Park located on the intercostal waterway provides for an excellent opportunity to explore Georgia’s natural wildlife. The six miles of trails pass through salt marshes over bridges, forest, and lead to scenic waterway views. Along the way keep an eye out for crabs, deer, many bird species, and raccoons. Additionally the park offers three playgrounds. Daily admission for the family is $5.00 with an option to rent bicycles for an additional charge. Savannah offers fun for the whole family. Enjoy visiting what the city has to offer. Please visit the websites for the most up to date information.
