Executive Chef Randy Johnston

Perhaps no other chef in the Smith & Wollensky family is as well traveled as Washington D.C.’s Executive Chef, Randy Johnston Jr. Chef Johnston was born in Gainsville, Georgia. He graduated from Virginia’s Hargrave Military Academy in 1985, then went to college in Gainesville where he received a Hotel, Restaurant and Travel Degree. Not being quite satisfied, he then went to Johnson and Wales in Charleston S.C. and graduated with an A.S. in culinary arts, then proceeded on to Johnson and Wales in Providence to receive a B.S. in Food Service Managment. He has worked in Mexico, Bahama, The Dominican Republic and, of course, the States.
His travel started when, after Johnson and Wales in Providence, he became Sous Chef for the Ramada Inn corp. He worked there until he landed the coveted Pastry Chef position at Club Med. He remained there for five years. Randy’s cooking background is also quite diverse. Returning from Club Med, he worked in various ethnic restaurants, Italian and American among them.
In September of 1998 he joined the Smith & Wollensky Restaurant Group. He was involved in the Las Vegas opening and then came back east to work at the Philadelphia location. Randy is a certified Sous and Pastry Chef. He is currently the Executive Chef at our Washington D.C. location, where in his kitchen serving the ultimate in quality and service is law.
