Chef/Owner Isabella Mannone-Bertuccio
La Fontanella Began on 24th and Oakley in Chicago…..
La Fontanella Restaurant has been rated the “Best” both in Chicago where it started as a family operation in 1972 and here in Phoenix, where it was started all alone by a young, single member of that family, named Isabella. Since opening in 1982, it’s been honored by local, national and international leading publications and featured in Phoenix Home and Garden, and in the Arizona Republic. La Fontanella has been awarded Best Italian Restaurant by New Times and the Arizona Republic, also in the Fodor’s Guide, Mobil Guide and the Zagat.
Isabella Mannone-Bertuccio, chef-owner, serves classic Tuscan and Sicilian fare in this Italian villa-like dining room, adorned with linen covered tables with fresh flowers, white lace curtains, antiques, ceramic collectibles and oil paintings. Maybe we’re in Florence…The extensive menu is adorned by a 80+ wine list selection and by her Sicilian husband’s, Berto’s Gelato luscious ice cream desserts (worth the trip alone). Berto whom she met in her restaurant and married in 1987, supplies most of the finer restaurants and resorts in the valley.
“Berto has brought sweetness to my life…”
She is especially proud of her kitchen staff that she has trained and servers. Most of the staff has been with her between 8 and 20 years. In November 2002, La Fontanella Restaurant celebrated its 20th year in Phoenix.
Isabella basically learned the art of Italian Cooking from her mother, who was the chef at the first Chicago location, supplemented by a year in Tuscany and classes with Marcella Hazan, and her own personal research of old treasured recipees from both Tuscan and Sicilian family members.
