“Cook good, serve generously, price modestly, people will come.” Since 1905, this
remains the guiding philosophy of Shapiro’s Delicatessen. Af ter emigrating to America in
1903 from Odessa, Russia, Louis Shapiro opened a small grocery store just south of downtown
Indianapolis with his wife Rebecca and their eight children. Before long, many of Rebecca’s
dinner recipes were being served to a hungry public. Business boomed through several
expansions of the kitchen and the addition of a bakery. Our signature corned beef, pastrami,
rye bread, pickles, and desserts are presented today just as they were many years ago,
piled high and loaded with the finest quality ingredients
