Executive Chef Jonathan Banta
Jonathan Banta is originally from New Jersey. He graduated from Johnson & Wales University in 1999. There he studied under Chef Nathan Koons, Chef Jose Garces, Chef Michael Isabella, Chef Douglas Rodriguez, and Chef Antoine Brunbauer.
His work and training in diverse environments in numerous capacities has resulted in an encompassing culinary perspective. Since his graduation in 1999, He served as the onboard chef of the Schooner A.J. Meerwald, New Jersey’s official tall ship. In Philadelphia, Jonathan worked with the Starr Restaurant Organization, for Alma de Cuba, and El Vez. As well, he served as Sous Chef of The Drafting Room in Springhouse, PA.
After moving to Charleston, Banta worked as Sous Chef of 82 Queen, which was voted “Best City Restaurant” by the readers of Southern Living Magazine for three consecutive years. In April of 2005 he joined 39 Rue de Jean as Sous Chef.
Two years later, in 2007, Banta accepted the position of Executive Chef of 39 Rue de Jean. As well, he and his wife Leslie were married on July 14th of the same year.
